Our Favorite Pairs Of Raw Jeans

Back jeans pocket with red price tag label

To test raw selvedge denim, I brought in six pairs to wear over the course of two months. Because it takes a while for raw denim to form to your body, I wore them religiouslyand tested them aloneswapping them on and off on a regular basis and jotting down notes about the style, feel, and look. These recommendations are my personal favorites. But all of the raw denim jeans I looked at were exciting for various reasons.

Vogue Encyclopaedia: The History Of Denim Jeans

The word jean started out in the 1800s, in reference to a twill cotton cloth used for trousers. But the textile soon became conflated with the garment it was commonly used for. Blue jeans, now called denim, were originally made from this fabric and manufactured in the French town of Nîmes . There is still debate over whether the word denim is an anglicized version of the French textile or whether the French name was given to an already existing English product to give it prestige. By the 20th century, jean was the term for a wide range of cotton or denim informal trousers.

The most recognizable, classic jeans as weve come to know them made from indigo-dyed denim with pockets and sturdy riveting suitable for workwear were patented in 1873 by Jacob Davis, a tailor, and Levi Strauss, owner of a wholesale fabric house in San Francisco.

Miners in jeans

The copper rivets used to reinforce the pockets were appreciated by miners and other labourers, who complained about frequent pocket rips. Strauss and Davis initially made jeans in two types of fabric, brown duck and blue denim, but the creation of the denim 501 style in 1890 helped the latter fabric take off.

Hollywood helped romanticize the blue jean in the 1920s and 1930s by putting the trousers on handsome cowboy types played by the likes of John Wayne and Gary Cooper.

Feature #: The Arcuates On The Back Pockets

The stitching on the back pockets from a pair of Levis Jeans is called Arcuate design. The name refers to the form of an arc. The arcuate stitching dates back to the earliest Levis waistoveralls from 1873. The arcuate stitching probaly refers to a flying rocky mountain eagle. This cant be confirmed by the company as the Levis headquarters and two factories were destroyed after a heavy earthquake and fire in San Francisco in the year 1906. The earthquake destroyed their complete archive.

The first Levis Jeansarcuates on the back pockets were stitched with a single needed sewing machine.

You will see various different single needed arcuate curves on vintage pairs of Levis back pockets, this reflects each operator skills. These curvy arcuates are also known as Crazy Eagle.

This can be seen on this original worn pair of Levis 501XX from the 1930s. See more details of this pair here.

In 1943 Levis Jeans registered their arcuate as a trademark to prevent copying by other denim brands. After World War 2 Levis Jeans started to stitch their arcuates with double needed sewing machines. The picture here below shows the double stitched arcuate on a vintage pair of Levis 501XX jeans from the late 1960s. See more details of this pair here.

How We Picked And Tested

We started this guide by researching hundreds of pairs of jeans, culling the list to around 50 pairs of interest from popular retailers, other reviews, and roundups. For this piece, we focused on slim jeans marketed for men, though they can be worn by people of any gender. These jeans are shaped differently than jeans that are marketed as being for women. The jeans in this guide have straight cuts extending across the leg, a narrower waist, and a wider hip. By contrast, jeans made for women generally have a narrower hip and more size variety in the waist . We think slim jeans should fit comfortablyneither too loosely nor too tightly . They should fit straight through the hip, with a narrow opening around the leg. We used the following criteria to narrow down our list even further:

Construction: We spent time wearing each pair of jeans for a few weeks, as well as poking and prodding them to pinpoint issues like uneven stitching or flyaway threads.

Shrinkage: We measured the dimensions of each pair of jeans, and then we washed and dried them, noting any shrinking that occurred. None of the pairs we recommended shrank notably, but it was an issue with some that we dismissed.

Comfort: We considered how the fabric feltwhether it was coarse and rigid, or soft and smoothand how it might feel to wear all day.

Fabric: We noted the combination of fabric used, though most of the jeans we tested were 98% or more cotton, with the remainder being elastane.

What About Raw And Selvedge Denim

I spoke with Kiya Babzani, the co-founder of Self Edge, and Steve Cruz, the store manager at Naked & Famous Denim, to learn the differences between the denim we see in most stores versus raw selvedge denim. Heres the lowdown, per Babzani: Selvedge denim was originally called self edging fabric because the process created its own finished edge that didnt require more work to prevent fraying. Around the turn of the 15th century, workers shortened the term self edging fabric to selvedge as an abbreviation.

The terms raw and selvedge are often used interchangeably for denim, but a pair of jeans can be neither, either, or both. Selvedge refers to the finished edge of the fabric, and raw denim is the material that is unwashed and untreated, making it stiffer and more prone to bleeding indigo onto anything it touches. But it also conforms to your body over time for a unique fit and look. Uniqlo, for example, makes jeans that are selvedge stitched without being raw denim, and Levis 501 Shrink to Fit jeans are raw without being selvedge stitched.

And thats the beauty of denim, he said. If you buy a pre-distressed pair of jeans, by contrast, they may have lines all over them. But they probably wont match the natural lines that are produced by your bodys movements. They also wont be as comfortable .

Feature #: Hidden Rivets & Bar Tacks

Another key feature on vintage pairs of Levis Jeans are the so called hidden rivets. In 1937 Levis Jeans introduced these hidden rivets on the back of the pockets. The rivets were sewn so that they were only visible from the inside, due to consumer complaints regarding scratching furniture and saddles by the previous rivets that were placed on the outside. As Levis 501XX Jeans were popular by cowboys they complaint about their scratched leather horse saddeles.

On each pair of Levis Jeans 501XX produced from 1937 was a pocketflasher with the words: The Rivets Still There as introduction of the hidden rivets.

Levis Jeans changed in 1966 their hidden rivets into bar tacks on their jeans. Technology made it possible to strength the back pockets with bar tacks instead of rivets. This was the end of complaints about scratching furnitures. Note that also the hidden rivets came through the denim fabric after intense wear, so bar tacks were the perfect solution.

Feature #: Colour Of Thread

The orange thread used on the original Levis Jeans has now become an industry standard. Legend has it that tailor Jacob Davis originally insisted that the thread has to be orange to match the jeans copper rivets. But Levis Jeans cant confirm this rumor as all the records are destroyed by the earthquake in 1906.

On vintage pairs of Levis Jeans, mostly on early Big E jeans, you see a combination of yellow and orange thread.
