First played in August 1881, the US Open is one of the oldest tennis championships in the world. US Open was formerly known as the U.S. National Championship. The tournament was first held on grass courts at the Newport Casino in Newport, Rhode Island.

In early 1915, a group of 100 tennis players signed a petition in favor of moving the tournament to New York City. Since most tennis clubs, players, and fans were in the New York City area, the petitioners felt it would be the ideal place to host the National Championships.

Despite opposition to the contentious issue, in August 1915, the mens singles tournament was held in the West Side Tennis Club in New York City for the first time, while the womens singles event wasnt moved until 1921.

National Tennis Centerstrategic Vision Project

NYC Parks, in coordination with USTA National Tennis Center Incorporated , is seeking a number of discretionary actions in connection with proposed improvements and an expansion to its facilities at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center . The 42-acre NTC is located within Flushing Meadows Corona Park on parkland leased by NYC Parks to USTA and is one of the worlds largest public recreational tennis facilities. For 11 months of the year, NTC facilities are open to the public for indoor and outdoor tennis. The NTC is also host to the US Open, one of the sports four Grand Slam championship tennis tournaments.

On June 20, 2012, NYC Parks, as lead agency for the CEQR environmental review for the USTA NTC Strategic Vision Project, issued a Positive Declaration for the project and directed that a Draft Environmental Impact Statement be prepared. At the same time, a Draft Scope of Work for an EIS was issued for public comment. A public scoping meeting was held on July 23, 2012 at the NTC Indoor Training Center at David Dinkins Circle, Flushing Meadows Corona Park, to accept oral and written comments. Written comments on the proposed projects Scope of Work were accepted through August 8, 2012. The Final Scope of Work for this projects EIS, including a summary of comments received and responses to those comments, was issued on December 27, 2012.

National Tennis Center Expected To Admit First Patients In Temporary Hospital Friday

The first COVID-19 patients are expected to arrive Friday at the temporary hospital that has been set up at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, N.Y.

The first set of 150 beds is nearing completion, with officials from New York City’s building and fire departments likely to sign off on the facility in the next day or two.

The temporary hospital is being housed in the NTC’s Indoor Training Center and will see 12 courts and around 100,000 square feet of space converted into 475 beds, including 20 for Intensive Care Unit patients.

Elsewhere at the tennis center, the site of the US Open, a different set of teams has been creating meal packages that are being distributed to patients, workers and school children.

Levy Restaurants, the food and beverage supplier for the US Open, and Restaurant Associates are using Louis Armstrong Stadium’s commissary to fulfill the packages. Teams have been creating the packages from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. six days a week since last Monday.

Each package consists of two days worth of breakfast, lunch and dinner, with teams creating 25,000 packages every day. Crews have prepared and delivered more than 1.2 million meals in the past nine days.

Eleana Yu expressed her desire to play the soon-to-be retiring Serena Williams. The former World No. 1 revealed her plans to retire after the US Open via and article in Vogue Magazine last week.

“I think it would be a dream come true to play one of the greatest of all time, especially when she is gonna retire so soon,” Yu said in an interview after the final.

In 1978, the Grand Slam shifted to the newly constructed USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows. Today, the venue comprises 33 outdoor courts along with a Grandstand Stadium, Louis Armstrong Stadium, and the Arthur Ashe Stadium, which is the largest tennis stadium in the world, with a seating capacity of 23,771.

Interestingly, the US Open has been played on a variety of surfaces since its inception. From 1881 to 1974, it was played on grass from 1975 to 1977, on clay and since 1978, on DecoTurf, a fast hard-court surface.

In fact, the 8-time Grand Slam champion, Jimmy Connors, is the only player to have won US Open singles titles on three surfaces .

On August 28, 2006, during the opening night of the US Open, the USTA renamed the National Tennis Center. It was changed to USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in the honor of the legendary, Billie Jean King.

It was an incredible gesture to pay tribute to the legacy of Billie Jean King, a four-time US Open champion and staunch campaigner for equal pay for women in the 70s.

Over the years, the US Open has made significant strides in technology adoption and the development of its infrastructure. In 2006, US Open became the first Grand Slam to install the Hawk-Eye system while in 2016 it again took the lead to introduce the shot clock to monitor the time consumed by players between points.

Construction has begun on building a 350-bed hospital facility at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the home of the US Open.

New York Citys Emergency Management office is coordinating the transformation of 12 courts at the NTC’s Indoor Training Center into almost 100,000 square feet of supplemental hospital space.

The move comes as the city continues to respond to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. New York City is among the hardest-hit places in the United States.

Each package will consist of two days worth of breakfast, lunch and dinner for patients, workers and children.

Its an incredibly small part, but its the least we can do, said USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center Chief Operating Officer Danny Zausner.

Elmhurst Hospital in Queens is a stones throw away from the tennis center. For us to be in the local community where our hands are tied, but to support the local community and help take some pressure off of Elmhurst Hospital is a huge thing for us to help out in any way we can.

Zausner was contacted earlier this month after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the expected need for thousands of additional hospital beds. Officials visited the site last Tuesday and again on Friday before deciding on Monday the Indoor Training Center met their needs.

The NTC becomes the second site in Queens to be used as a temporary hospital after the Aqueduct racecourse was earmarked last week.

On opening night at the U.S. Open, the tennis world took care ofthat for her.

King, a winner of 39 career Grand Slam titles, was honoredMonday night when the home of the U.S. Open was renamed the USTABillie Jean King National Tennis Center. The champion in singles,doubles and mixed doubles made an equally — if not more importantmark — as a pioneer for the equality of women.

In addition to 67 singles win on tour, King earned a monumentalvictory for women’s rights by beating Bobby Riggs in the 1973″Battles of the Sexes” match at the Houston Astrodome. Theimportance of that event was felt around the world.

King was responsible for organizing the Women’s TennisAssociation, a union that lobbied for equality in tennis.

“My mom, Betty Moffitt, always told me to follow theShakespeare saying, ‘To thine own self be true,” said King, asshe became emotional on the court while her mother cried in thestands. “I hope to continue to always do that.”

Her mother never saw her play at the U.S. Open but she satcourtside Monday night when King was lauded by such tennisluminaries as Chris Evert, Venus Williams, John McEnroe, and JimmyConnors — who like King were champions at New York’s Grand Slam.

The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center is a stadium complex within Flushing MeadowsCorona Park in Queens, New York City, United States. It has been the home of the US OpenGrand Slamtennis tournament, played every year in August and September, since 1978 and is operated by the United States Tennis Association . The facility has 22 courts inside its 46.5 acres and 12 in the adjoining park. All 33 courts used the cushioned acrylic surface since the facility was built in 1978.
